| Hammer Horror | 63 | Hammer Horror derives from Hammer Film Productions, a film production company in the United Kingdom founded in 1934. It was best known for its series of gothic horror films that were produced between the years 1950-1970. Hammer films were cheap to produce but nonetheless appeared lavish, making use of quality British actors and cleverly designed sets. The production studio has made two of its stars famous for utilizing them in a plethora of their films; Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing who both appeared in a series of Hammer Horror adaptations of Dracula and Frankenstein films. The birth of Hammer Horror came with the 1955 film, The Quatermass Xperiment which was followed by a sequel Quatermass 2 from there on the studio began to produce, what they are now famous for, Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Mummy movies... the rest is history. | ||

The company produces very low-budget, independent movies, many of which have developed small cult followings around the world. Troma films are known for their shocking imagery; some would categorizet hem as shock exploitation films. They typically contain overt sexuality, graphic violence, wry political satire, a bizarre sense of humor and gratuitous gore and nudity. Troma's slogan is “Movies of the Future”. Troma is also known for re-cycling the same props, actors, and scenes over and over again, sometimes to save money, mostly for comic effect. This has become a hallmark of Troma's filmmaking style. Many now-famous celebrities got their start at Troma including Kevin Costner, Samuel L. Jackson (Def by Temptation), Marisa Tomei (The Toxic Avenger), Vincent D'Onofrio (The First Turn-On), James Gunn (Tromeo and Juliet), Trey Parker and Matt Stone (Cannibal! The Musical). |
