About WikiTorrent
Introduction
WikiTorrents is user-created wiki pages of BitTorrent links to movies, music, & more. Pages have a theme, like a category, person, or subject. This site specializes in feature-length videos in "good enough" quality and encoded in XViD / DiVX / MP4 / H.264 / ISO that use public torrents. WikiTorrents links to many trackers and BitTorrent search engines. We welcome links to videos that are mainstream, documentary, artsy, independent, rare, and obscure. Why
Many BitTorrent sites have unofficial "collections", but they are not well-organized. Using a wiki allows the process to be uniform, easier to use, and more accessible. Keeping the wiki on its own site separate from actual BitTorrent sites allows collections to refer to torrents on multiple sites. If a BitTorrent tracker goes down, the wiki page can then be updated to refer to the same torrent on a different site. Not only does WikiTorrents offer those benefits, but there's the added benefit of not needing approval to create a page. Many of the BitTorrent trackers that offer wiki-style "collection" systems require approval from the site's admins. Since WikiTorrents only hosts the wiki page and the torrents are hosted elsewhere, users don't need admin approval to create a page.
The Problem With Private Trackers
A big aspect of BitTorrent culture is "private trackers", niche sites that specialize in particular genres of torrents. The benefit of private trackers is that they are very communal, and their users are very active in completing each other's collections. The problem with private trackers is that the torrents themselves are private, so every torrent and every seeder is gone forever if the site goes down. Many private trackers are also invite-only, preventing potential users from the ability to conduct research, contribute, or fill requests. What is BitTorrent
BitTorrent is the global standard for delivering high-quality files over the Internet. Invented by Bram Cohen, BitTorrent has an installed base of over 160 million clients worldwide. BitTorrent technology has turned conventional distribution economics on its head. The more popular a large video, audio or software file, the faster and cheaper it can be transferred with BitTorrent. The result is a better digital entertainment experience for everyone.BitTorrent is a protocol (a set of rules and description of how to do things) allowing you to download files quickly by allowing people downloading the file to upload (distribute) parts of it at the same time. BitTorrent is often used for distribution of very large files, very popular files and files available for free, as it is a lot cheaper, faster and more efficient to distribute files using BitTorrent than a regular download.
